Hello and welcome to The House of Chrome. You are looking at a unique older and very practical adapters called the A88A “grip to talk” microphone adapter made by Shure Brothers during the late 1940’s to late 50’s. This microphone handle is an on / off adapter that will hold almost all Shure mics from the 1930’s until 1959. It comes with it’s hard to find original box and data sheet. Pic# 2 is from a 1951 Shure catalog showing this very adapter along with it’s basic characteristics. Most Shure models that were pre-1960 did not come with on / off switches so this was a very practical adapter that gave you that option. You could either depress the lever manually to engage the mic to go live or you could depress and lower the laver to stay on at all times. A very clever design. In 1960 Shure redesigned most of the lower pistol grips on their mics so this adapter wont work with models made from 1960 and on. It just won’t seat properly. You need to use pre 60 mics with this A88A. The A88A is an all metal design with a satin chrome finish and black bakelite lever in which to operate the mic. The A88A will screw onto any desk or floor stand you might have but it works especially well with a Shure S-36 desk stand. You’ll see that the black lever can be depressed manually for live setting only when you wish to talk into your mic or you can depress the lever and push downward (as seen in pic # 10 & 11) so the lever locks into place making it live 100% of the time. It’s a very practical design. To seat your Shure mic on top you simply unscrew the two small screws to remove the top cover. You can then use the large brass bolt to tighten the cover to your mic. Then install the 3 pin connector and screw the cover back into place. Only takes 30 seconds to do. You can see there is almost no wear on the A88A adapter. The original Shure decal is still completely present which you don’t often see. The decals are almost always completely wore off. This adapter functions perfectly which is a rarity as most that I come across need to be rewired or have had the wiring yanked out. They haven’t made these in many years so they are a bit hard to come by and very desirable. You’ll see the original data sheet is included and shows you a bit of info on the adapter. Both original brass screws are included to tighten down both the mic you’ll be using as well as the A88A to any stand you choose to use. The original hard to find box is in very good shape and a great accessory for resale purposes as well as to store the contents. They just don’t come any nicer than this.
