GOVERNOR LUCIUS FAIRCHILD – AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 03/24/1887 – HFSID 253674 GOVERNOR LUCIUS FAIRCHILD Autograph Letter signed as Commander-in-Chief of the GAR (1887) Autograph Letter Signed: “Lucius Fairchild” as Commander in Chief, 1 page, 3½x2. National Headquarters, Grand Army of the Republic, Madison, Wisconsin, 1887 March 24. To Miss E.W. Peck, Dorchester, Mass. In full: “I have no letter written by Genl Hooker – I wish I had. You should have it. I never had such a letter.” Lucius Fairchild (1831-1896) served with famous Wisconsin “iron brigade” during the Civil War, losing his left arm while leading a charge in the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Leaving the service as a brevet brigadier general, Fairchild served Wisconsin as its Secretary of State (1864-1866) and Governor (1866-1872). Later he served as US consul in Liverpool and in Paris, and was US Minister to Spain. He was also Commander-in-Chief of the influential veterans’ organization, the Grand Army of the Republic (1887).Lightly creased. Folds, vertical fold touches first “u” in Lucius. Pencil note (unknown hand) at lower blank edge. 6×1-inch shading at upper margin touches letterhead and shaded at blank left vertical edge. Minor separations at blank horizontal folds (all intact).
