New York – Copyright 1913 The History of Ichthyol and Formulas for a Variety of Conditions~ ~ ~ ~ ~This nearly 109 year-old book is in Very Good condition for its age. The pages are just slightly yellowed, but there are no inscriptions or markings of any sort that could be found anywhere throughout the book. There is some very slight shelf wear on the bottom of the cover and a small ‘crinkle’ to the top right corner of the cover. (see photos) The cover, by the way, is something between a ‘softback’ and a ‘hardback’ cover… more flexible than a hardback, but definitely not a paperback.~ ~ ~ ~ ~This book, published by Merck & Co. in 1913, outlines the history of “Ichthyol” and the various formulas in which it was used to treat a variety of conditions. It is interesting to look back and see, during a time marked by more than just a little medical “quackery”, what practitioners (and traveling salesmen) thought this product could cure. There is also some rather intriguing information regarding the discovery, mining, production, and folklore surrounding the raw materials from which this compound is produced. (See photos for the fable of the two giants, Haymon & Thiersch) All in all, this is a very interesting book and would be a great addition to your Science Library. And judging from the number listed for sale here, they are becoming harder to find with each passing year. [And if you’re interested, Ichthyol (now a brand name for ammonium bituminosulphonate) can still be found for sale today on…, you guessed it, Amazon.] ~ ~ ~ ~ ~The photos included with this listing are your best indication of the overall condition of this book, please examine them closely, as this is the exact item you will receive.
