This amazing piece of American Harness Racing Memorabilia was issued by the J & P COATS Company as a Premium advertising their Six Cord Spool Cotton, during . It is one from a series entitled “ Famous Horses” (First series) . It features portrait photographs of famous Champion Running, Trotting and Pacing thoroughbreds done in a Cabinet Card Style. Each card is fairly large and measure 4 6/8 inches by 4 3/16 inches approximately. Unfortunately I have not been able to find this series referenced in any guide that I am aware of (that includes Burdick’s American Card Catalogue) Because of this I have never been able to confirm a date. However after doing some research on the site allbreedpadigree.com I have found that most of the horses I have come across were born in the late 1880’s through to the mid 1890’s. Because of this I have always assumed that these cards were issued during the lat 1890’s. However that is just informed speculation on my part. This cards features the famous DIRECTUM and gives the Horses a Record time of 2:06 . Here is some information I found about Nancy Hanks on the web: Directum was by Director out of Stemwinder, foaled in 1889 and bred by John Green of Dublin, California. He was leased to Monroe Salisbury and under the driving of John Kelley became the king of trotters as a colt, taking a mark of 2:05 1/4 on October 18, 1892 at Nashville. As a four-year-old Directum was the fastest trotting stallion; fastest four-year-old trotter; winner of the fastest heat by a four-year-old; and shared with Alix the fastest heat trotted at that time. He was purchased by William E. Speir, Glens Falls, New York in 1898 for $21,000, and was in stud at his Suburban Stock Farm. Directum was then purchased at auction in 1901 by M. W. Savage for $12,100 and placed at stud in Minnesota, where he remained until his death in November 1909. Directum was inducted into the Harness Racing Hall of fame in 1956 The card does have some edge and corner wear/chipping (virtually unavoidable with a dark bordered card) It also has what appears to be some sort of surface adhesive left on the back in a few areas. Possible from where it was adhered into a Victorian scrap album. Despite this I think the front image displays very well. I have scanned this card fairly large for you to be able to judge condition. It also has a fantastic overstamp from the store is would have been given away at that states “Peoples Store J. Lustig Propr.” This is a fantastic cross over collectable. Highly desired by collectors of Rare American Horseracing memorabilia and historical items, Rare Tobacco collectables and those who can appreciate great lithographic works. This would make a fantastic addition to any Horse Racing or HARNESS Racing or TROTTER Memorabilia Collection. This would also make a fantastic and rare display piece that would make an unforgettable gift for any Thoroughbred Breeder, Owner or Enthusiast Where else can you get such a beautiful Victorian HORSERACING Photographic card of this age and quality, this inexpensive?
