Antique Jeweled Porcelain Coalport Box & CoverAll Over Gilded DetailingTurquoise and Ruby Red Enamel “Jewels”1893 Chicago Exhibition Rare and beautiful Antique Jeweled Porcelain Coalport Box and Cover. Stamped 1893 Chicago Exhibition. Gorgeous and exceptional antique condition. Lid fits beautifully. NO chips, cracks, repairs, etc.Sits on 4 leafy feet. The very bottom of one of the feet feels the tiniest bit rough.I mention this for accuracy — Under magnification, I see no damageand the porcelain and gold gilt are intact.So, I’m thinking it is from the manufacturing process. Normal very minor wear on edges as expected with age. Measures 3-3/8″ inches in diameter andstands just under 3” tall. Porcelain ‘Gems’ ‘Jewelling’ is a refined ceramic technique created by fusing droplets of colored enamel over gold and silver foil to form intricate ornamentation in imitation of rare gems. The technique was employed at Sèvres circa 1778-86 and flourished in the mid-nineteenth century at the august English porcelain firms of Coalport, Derby, Minton and Worcester. By the end of the nineteenth century, the art of fine ‘jeweling’ reached a new zenith. Commenting on the production at Coalport, the trade paper Pottery Gazette noted in 1892: “… this ornamentation is exceedingly rich and is shown on a great variety of fancy shapes. For the most part these are quite new models, and some of the tall handled vases are true artistic productions. The imitation of jewelled setting is very perfect, particularly the ruby, topaz and turquoise.” The following year at the Chicago World’s Fair, The Columbian Exhibition of 1893, Coalport ‘jewelled’ wares were described as “astonishing” and the exhibit was awarded the highest prize for the ceramic industries represented.
