Binding tight and solid. “A Terry Texas Ranger: The Life Record Of H. W. Graber” is the autobiography of H. W. Graber (1841-1917) a Texas Cavalryman who fought under the famous Benjamin Franklin Terry’s famed cavalryman’s regiment during the Civil War. Born in Germany, H. W. Graber was six years old when his family moved to the United States and soon afterwards became an orphan when both parents died soon afterwards. Being the oldest he had to care for his brothers and sisters before the war came and held various jobs in Texas. When Texas seceded from the Union, Graber first served as a volunteer under John Salmon “Rip” Ford . He participated in the battle of Fort Brown. He returned to his home of Hempstead, Texas and helped raise a company of cavalrymen that would soon be under Benjamin F. Terry in the Eighth Texas Cavalry aka “Terry’s Texas Rangers”. Graber was offered at various times to take a commission but each time he refused. These tough Texans would fight in many battles of the Civil War and Graber describes each battle he was in and had some humorous yet vivid accounts of the actions of battle. He describes the battles during the cavalry campaigns in Kentucky in 1861, at Mufreesboro, Bardstown, Perryville and throughout Georgia. Private Graber wrote about his service in Terry’s Texas Rangers decades after the war, and at times his history in the war is disjointed in the timeline of the war, yet he must be forgiven if his memory at times is vague since it was a long time after the war that he wrote them down. He became a wanted man by the Federals and had to go by an assumed name right before the war was over and successfully made it back to Texas where he would became a businessman in Hempstead, Rusk, Waxahachie, and Dallas. Private Graber would became very active in the United Confederate Veterans to help keep the history alive of the Confederacy and at times help his fellow veterans if needed. Private Graber’s story was first printed in 1916 primarily for his friends and family with only a few copies being released for sale to the general public. The outstanding introduction to the 1987 release was written by Thomas W. Curter, who gives the highlights of Graber’s life and service. To review the details that Graber wrote about the battles and life of his service would take several pages of review, so I suffice to write that his memories are excellent, his prose in writing is excellent and once you read his history the book is hard to put down.
